"Remember, I am with you always to the end of the age" (Mt 28:20)

"I Am A Poor Boy Too! I Played My Best For Him"

S
t Ignatius holds that it does not matter how short or how long one's prayer period will take for as long as the goal is achieved, i.e., “To have God always before one’s eyes.” To fix our gaze solely on one thing would already be a big grace to receive in a single formal prayer period, let alone to find God. Fixing one’s own gaze on God, goes beyond finding God. For the musically inclined among us, it is like following or playing the beat in everything, without going too fast or too slowly. During this time of the Epiphany of the Lord let us be guided by the example of the poor shepherds and the wise men bearing gifts. Ever in Scripture it is the heart that prays. Through Audio Divina—praying through listening, play simultaneously the music video and the heartbeat sound effect picturing your heart beating like the little drummer boy's drum. Be like this poor boy who comes before the baby Jesus bearing no gift except to sing and to keep time on a small drum together with the ox and the lamb. Fr JM Manzano SJ

Come they told me
Pa rum pum pum pum

A new born king to see
Pa rum pum pum pum

Our finest gifts we bring
Pa rum pum pum pum

To lay before the king
Pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum

So to honor him
Pa rum pum pum pum
When we come

Pum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum pa rum

Little baby
Pa rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too
Pa rum pum pum pum

I have no gift to bring
Pa rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our king
Pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum

Shall I play for you
Pa rum pum pum pum
Pa rum pum pum
Pum pum pum pum

Mary nodded
Pa rum pum pum pum
The ox and lamb kept time
Pa rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for him
Pa rum pum pum pum

I played my best for him
Pa rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum,
Rum pum pum pum

Then he smiled at me
Pa rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum

Come they told me
Pa rum pum pum pum
A new born king to see
Pa rum pum pum pum

Me and my drum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum
Me and my drum
Rum pum pum pum

  1. Hello po, Fr. JM!
Hope you had a wonderful celebration of Christmas and new year...

The lyrics and the meaning of this Old Christmas Carol is an epiphany for me... :')
Honestly, I failed to see through the meaning of the lyrics of this song until I came to read your post... Though it is one the famous carols... Yet maybe when someone got used of or to something (overly familiar) you tend to ignore its value...
    It's really Beautiful!
Not yet late to take my "drum" and play it loudly with joy for the baby Jesus...

    Salamat po... :')

    1. Thanks for your candid sharing! There are lots of other things that we have "outgrown" like this old song! It opens the great opportunity of discovering so much more... I am reminded of the saying by TS Eliot "We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we began and to know the place for the first time" (Little Gidding).
